Backpacking: an extended form of hiking in which people carry double the amount of gear they need for half the distance they planned to go in twice the time it should take.
4 Days on the AT from NYC, with No Car
It's doable! Read about a trip from the Metro North AT stop on the Harlem Line to the Metro North station at Garrison, and the trail in between.
This is the section of the AT that goes through Fahnestock State Park, the end point of a hike from Kent, Connecticut (also accessible by public transit) that the Tarpmaster and I took in 1996 (pre-kids), and the starting point of our hike with the boys two years ago. (In three trips, we've hiked the AT from Great Barrington, Massachusetts to Monroe, NY. I think the next leg will be from Monroe to High Point State Park in New Jersey.)Share
